This class is for writers grappling with how to structure personal essays or book-length memoirs. Whether your writing is largely theoretical or fully underway, this workshop will help you develop a practical and conceptual framework to move forward. We will discuss form (timelines, story arc, beginnings and endings), and craft (dialogue, scenes, language). Students will be asked to complete a short in-class writing exercise.

Zoe FitzGerald Carter is the author of the memoir, Imperfect Endings: A Daughter’s Story of Love, Loss, and Letting Go (Simon & Schuster). A graduate of Columbia Journalism School, Zoe has written for numerous publications including The New York Times, The San Francisco Chronicle, Salon and Vogue
