We have multiple ways of building our characters— their appearance, their actions, their thoughts, and of course their words. The writer Robert Boswell once said that dialogue “is like neon: too much of it and you end up seeing none of it—it is all flash and no content.” How do we write dialogue that appears realistic but is uncluttered, that conceals and reveals, seduces, protects, and rejects? She has taught writing in several universities.
