Carlos Santana - The Universal Tone

Angelico Hall, Dominican University
Tickets: $35 (includes signed book)

Carlos Santana's unforgettable memoir offers a page-turning tale of musical self-determination and inner self-discovery, with personal stories filled with colorful detail and life-affirming lessons. The Universal Tone traces his journey from his earliest days playing the strip bars in Tijuana while barely in his teens and brings to light the establishment of his signature guitar sound; his roles as husband, father, recording legend, and rock guitar star; his indebtedness to musical and spiritual influences -- from John Coltrane and John Lee Hooker to Miles Davis and Harry Belafonte; and his deep, lifelong dedication to a spiritual path that he developed from his Catholic upbringing, Eastern philosophies, and other mystical sources. It includes his recording some of the most popular and influential rock albums of all time, up to and beyond the 1999 sensation Supernatural, which garnered nine Grammy Awards and stands as arguably the most amazing career comeback in popular music history.

Delivered with a level of passion and soul equal to the legendary sonic charge of his guitar, the sound of Carlos Santana is one of the world's best-known musical signatures. For more than four decades—from Santana's earliest days as a groundbreaking Afro-Latin-blues-rock fusion outfit in San Francisco—Carlos has been the visionary force behind artistry that transcends musical genres and generational, cultural and geographical boundaries.

Timothy Shriver - Fully Alive

As chairman of Special Olympics, Timothy P. Shriver has dedicated his life to the world’s most forgotten minority—people with intellectual disabilities. And in a time when we are all more rudderless than ever, when we’ve lost our sense of what’s ultimately important, when we hunger for stability but get only uncertainty, he has looked to them for guidancemFully Alive chronicles Shriver’s discovery of a radically different, and inspiring, way of life. We see straight into the lives of those who see powerless but who have turned that into a power of their own, and through them learn that we are all totally vulnerable and totally valuable at the same time.

Timothy Shriver is a social leader, educator, activist, film producer, and business entrepreneur. He is the third child of Eunice Shriver, founder of the Special Olympics. As chairman of the Special Olympics, he serves more than three million athletes in 180 countries. He cofounded and currently chairs the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), the leading research organization in the United States in the field of social and emotional learning. Shriver earned his undergraduate degree from Yale University, a master’s degree from Catholic University, and a doctorate in education from the University of Connecticut. He lives in Maryland with his wife and five children.
