Montgomery Parks (Images of America)
Description
Readers interested in the history and importance of public spaces that invite people to enjoy the outdoors will be drawn to the images and storytelling included in Montgomery County Parks. Eleven percent of the land in Montgomery County, Maryland, is managed by The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC). Founded in 1927, M-NCPPC's Montgomery Parks has a long tradition of creating public green space, stewarding natural and cultural resources, and providing accessible recreational experiences for all. By chronicling the evolution of this park system, beginning with the oldest stream valley parks developed during the Great Depression in Chevy Chase and Silver Spring and ending with new innovative parks on the horizon, this book provides visual evidence of how M-NCPPC has won the prestigious National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management six times.
Author Dr. Jamie Ferguson serves as the historian for M-NCPPC's Montgomery Parks. Since 2008, she has produced archival research for master plans, interpretive signage, museum exhibits, land histories, historic property designations, media pieces, and public inquiries that provide the foundation for this book. Using vintage images mostly from this agency's archives, this pictorial history celebrates the 100th anniversary of M-NCPPC by profiling some of the 415 parks in the Montgomery Parks system. The current Montgomery Parks director, Miti Figueredo, provides a reflective foreword.
